The Unwanted Six Million

The Unwanted Six Million THE wires have got crossed, and local marketlovers have run into a little local difficulty. The 'exit' policy has raised the hopes of employers across-the-board; with glee in its heart, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry has projected a total lay-off in the organised sector of 6 million people in the course of the next few years. The finance minister has taken umbrage at this projection. He has grown wiser since the day he addressed his famous press conference in Bangkok to assure the bosses in the World Bank and the IMF that they could rest in peace, the exit policy would soon, very soon, be turned into a reality. To render jobless 6 million people, or to announce publicly the ambition to get rid of so many people, he now realises, is not political wisdom. The FICCI statement, he has rushed to say, is wild exaggeration, why, the exit policy will not hurt at all, the actual displacement of labour will not exceed three hundred thousand.
