The setback it suffered in the recent Uttar Pradesh council elections, when an independent supported by it was defeated, and three among its official candidates failed to make it after the first round of counting, indicated that the BJP legislators had indulged in cross-voting defying the party whip. If this is the state of affairs in the party's organisation in its bastion, Uttar Pradesh, one can well imagine the state of party discipline in the other states where the BJP may have less organisational strength and following.
