War It Is

War It Is LESS than 24 hours after the expiry of the January 15 UN deadline for Iraq to vacate its occupation of Kuwait, the US and its allies have attacked military and strategic targets in Iraq and Kuwait, using the most sophisticated aircraft and missiles. At the time of going to press Iraq has, as had been expected, directed its first counter-attack at Israel in the hope of provoking a retaliation from that country and thereby transforming the fighting into an Arab-Israeli conflict. The die had earlier been cast when Saddam Hussein rejected the five-point peace plan which UN Secretary-General Perez de Cuellar had, in a last-minute effort, carried to Baghdad under which Iraqi withdrawal from Kuwait would be followed by the removal of Western forces from Saudi Arabia, the installation of a UN peace-keeping force in Kuwait and the convening of a UN peace conference on West Asia as a whole.
