in Television Serials Prabha Krishnan The televised version of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata contain overt and subliminal messages which need to be read in the context of the all-pervasive violence fashioned out of political expediency, religious fundamen- talism and the essential male identity. The two programmes have been subjected to semiotogical analysis in order to elucidate how meaning is generated and conveyed.
