Pandering to the Rich Farm Lobby

The surplus farmers, to whose demands the National Front government is increasingly yielding, may pretend to be leaders of rural society as a whole, but they are engaged primarily in intensifying the exploitation of agricultural labourers and small farmers and in monopolising the gains from whatever growth takes place in the agricultural sector THE National Front government with the deputy prime minister, Devi Lal, holding the portfolio of agriculture has moved fast on the farm front. This should cause no surprise. The National Front and its con- stituent parties, in particular Janata Dal which is the main component, makes no bones about its rural bias and peasant base and regards the peasantry, in particular the rich and middle peasantry, as its special constituency.
