Society in Late Colonial India Michelguglielmo Torri This paper reviews the Cambridge school critique of the concept of "westernised middle class" that was extensively employed in studying the Indian national movement Elaborating on the inconsistencies of the alternatives proposed in the critique the author adduces a fresh proposal as a possible way out of the methodological labyrinth in which the theme has lost itself.
