Fetish of Consensus CONSENSUS, frantically engineered at the eleventh hour and trumpeted as unanimity, appears to have become an obsessive concern with the Janata Dal. For so self-consciously schismatic a party leading a minority government, the fetish of consensus is perhaps inevitable. Not that the divisions within the party are concealed by so transparent a device. On the contrary, the clumsiness with which it is effected only advertises what is so elaborately sought to be concealed, S R Bommai's installation as interim president of the party is only the latest instance of a desperately contrived unity between its warring factions.
