became leading members of the JKLF and other similar organisations harvesting the accumulated stock of grievances against misgovernment, corruption and nepotism compounded by repression. Even as the National Conference ministry's popular base eroded it was propped up by the centre, an exercise which entailed the latter's active participation in the process of subverting democracy. The current violence and 'anti-nationalism' have their roots in this political equation. Any so- called consensus that seeks to perpetuate the equation cannot but be futile, worse, counter-productive.
