showed 3,000 fatal cases, 30,000 permanent total and partial disability and 20,000 temporary total or partial disability and 50,000 with minor injuries. Further, in August an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court in the interim relief petition stated that on the basis of over 2 lakh medical folders evaluated, a lakh had been categorised and only 19 of these were in the category of permanent total disablement. How have these figures been arrived at? By a method of scoring in which arbitrary weightages have been given to various problems, with respiratory problems being given a high score. For instance, someone with severe psychological damage without showing any other health problems would have a low score and be excluded from the compensable categories. This is just one example of the absurdities of the methods used by the government authorities.
