A New Vision of the Health Workers Role

ONE of the most crucial, if benignly neglected elements in the delivery of health services is the health worker at the grassroots level. By background and training alienated from the people, many health workers when confronted with the overwhelming problems of poverty and disease in rural communities resort to the role of dispensers of medical technology, however dubious. Sensitive and motivated individuals striving to actualise their roles often end up in hopeless despair. The task of providing such workers a perspective within which they comprehend the reality of how poverty shapes ill health and disease is a as challenging task.
