PHILLIPS CARBON Feedstock Shortage PHILLIPS CARBON BLACK continued to experience a shortage of feedstock during 1987-88 since the Barauni refinery's production of better quality material declined by 19 per cent. Larger quantities of lower quality material had to be procured from the Haldia refinery and other more distant refineries. The demand for carbon black, on the other hand, has increased. 'Super-hard' blacks, which go into the manufacture of high grade tyres, are becoming more important. These can only be made with high-BMCI feedstock, indigenous production of which is stagnant.
