MAFATLAL-Sharp Setback

TATA IRON AND STEEL COMPANY (TISCO), as part of the continuing modernisation, has placed before the government a proposal to increase its saleable steel capacity to 2.7 million tonnes per annum to be achieved in 36 months from the date all necessary approvals are secured. Financing proposals for this project are simultaneously being finalised. The programme, when implemented, is likely to include important new finishing facilities, improved communications and additional power. The company has obtained .government clearances for Tata Korf Engineering Services (TAKES), which is effectively in operation now. Among its major new assignments is likely to be the setting up of a new 80-tonhe energy optimising furnace (EOF) at Jam- shedpur. The project for the manufacture of tapered roller bearings under Tata Timken is expected to be implemented within the next few months. The bearings division at Kharagpur produced 3.722 million bearings in 1987-88 and its sales stood at 3.758 million bearings. This division will yield returns only after a major expansion. For this, a technical collaboration agreement with Steyr of Austria has recently been signed for upgrading the existing facilities and increasing production to about 10 million bearings per annum from the present level of 3.9 million bearings per annum.
