Food for Work

Food for Work IN his article 'Food for Work: Food for Thought' (EPW, July 25), Arun Ghosh has not fully emphasised the problem of the magnitude of the cash outgo in the Food for Work programme, as envisaged by him. That is the cash required for the material component required for creating assets under these programmes. Considering that the assets created under these programmes should be lasting enough to benefit the people for whom they are meant, the cost of the materials component would be at least the equivalent of the wage component. Therefore, the total requirement would be at least Rs 7,800 crore for generating 3,000 million person- days at the wage rate assumed by him. The states cannot match the material content, given their resources.
