Sinhala chauvinism which by denying the legitimate political aspirations of the Tamil minority drove the latter to armed rebellion and thereby provided the opportunity for the Indian government to put up its regional big power show. In this context it is also useful to remember that the same Jayewardene government which has today invited in the Indian army into the country had earlier all along pandered to Sinhala chauvinism and baulked at a reasonable political settlement with the Tamils. This swinging of the Jayewardene government from the one extreme to the other is typical of the opportunism and short-sightedness of bourgeois political leaderships in third world countries.
