Certainly, not all the 176 mills in the public sector fall in the potentially viable category? Industry's spokesmen contend that modernisation of the textile industry will remain a dream until the government initiates steps to prune the excess capacity that is plaguing the industry and also enlarge the market for textiles through appropriate relief in fiscal levies. Ail sectors taken together, the industry is capable of producing around 25,000 million metres of cloth. Actual production is about half of this figure, pointing to the enormous excess capacity nursed by the industry as a whole.
