THE ECONOMY-As Seen through National Accounts Statistics

(CSO) deserves to be congratulated for publishing a set of tables on micro- economic aggregates and population for as long a period as 35 years from 1950-51 to 1985-86, both at 1970-71 and current prices, as appendices to its "National Accounts Statistics, 1970-71 to 1984-85". In addition to the population series, 22 parameters in nominal terms and 17 at constant prices have been presented. It is hoped that the CSO will bring out similar series for a number of other functional or sectoral categories which will be of immense help to research workers and other users of these statistics. It is not easy for researchers to build comparable series; also, frequent revisions and adjustments are effected in the CSO's estimates for past years. Before the CSO shifts the base period from 1970-71 to a more recent year, such comparable series from the beginning of the planning era can be a ready source material for the users of data on the economy.
