Short-sighted in Darjeeling

The people of the Darjeeling Hills could have been spared the woes of the violence during the last few weeks, but for the narrow interests of the different forces involved in the current dispute there. The local administration and the police wanted to teach the Gorkhaland agitators a lesson, and the latter wated to demonstrate their newly acquired striking power. Both New Delhi and Calcutta sat watching the spread of the fire that they had stoked.
