R and D in Industry Niggardly Private Sector RESEARCH and Development (R and D) is essential for generating product and process knowhow and for the assimilation, adaptation and further development of imported technology. One would have expected a study entitled "R and D in Industry, 1984-85"brought out by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) to assess how far industrial R and D has fulfilled its objectives. Instead, what the DST provides are data and information on the resource inputs, both financial and human, into R and D in industry.
