Following the dismissal of 22 Akali Dal legislators under the anti-defection law as upheld by the Supreme Court, Barnala was in a stronger position than before. He no longer needed Congress support to shore up his majority in the assembly. The relative strengthening of his position could not have been to the centre's liking since now he was more of an autonomous agent and hence less vulnerable to its blandishments. This may have been a factor of some consequence in the centre's decision to get him out.
