July 1985 mark. During 1985-86, the CCI had to procure a record 12.52 lakh bales under the price support operation on which it incurred a loss of Rs 59.96 crore. It lost another Rs 1,90 crore on commercial purchases of 3.22 lakh bales. The Maharashtra State Co-operative Cotton Growers' Federation procured a record 29.65 lakh bales under the monopoly scheme on which it incurred a staggering loss of Rs 310 crore. The current season (1986-87) presents a very different picture. The CCI expects its operations during 1986-87 to yield a profit of about Rs 3 crore, the Maharashtra federation is hopeful of making a profit of about Rs 40 crore and distribute Rs 30 crore among the cotton growers by way of additional bonus and transfer Rs 10 crore to the price equalisation fund which had been completely wiped out by 1984-85.
