as refined cottonseed oil which has a fairly good market is exempt from excise duty. Soybean oil does not enjoy any support from the vanaspati industry as its usage does not bring any excise relief. Even so, soybean oil prices have recorded a big rise. This is because of the sustained demand for refined oil which, being exempt from excise duty, is relatively cheap. Rapeseed oil prices have firmed up partly in sympathy with the steep rise in-other edible oils and partly because the vanaspati industry is permitted to use this oil upto 40 per cent (inclusive of 10 per cent solvent extracted oil) of its total oil requirements.
