By December 12, it had purchased kapas equivalent of 2.60 lakh bales of which about 1.18 lakh bales are said to fall under the price support operation which compares with 78,000 bales purchased during the entire 1984-85 season. Support price operations have been restricted to states other than Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan and, of course, Maharashtra which is operating a monopoly procurement scheme. Going by the market behaviour and the general assessment of the overall demand- supply position, it seems very likely that CCI will be called upon to undertake price support operations on a really large scale.
