Tamil Nadu- Victims of Beautification

Tamil Nadu TWENTY-FOUR hours before the Supreme Court directed the Tamil Nadu government to return to the fishermen their catamarans seized from the Madras Marina beach exactly a month earlier, six persons had been killed and about a hundred injured in firings resorted to by the policemen, reportedly led personally by the police commissioner of the city, assisted by a large posse of deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners and inspectors, not to mention the constables. The entire episode is characteristic of the Indian polity today which feels no shame in according priority to the so-called beauti- fication of its metropolitan centres irrespective of its human cost and indeed without a modicum of human consideration.
