diversion of land from sugarcane to other crops, there was acute scarcity of cane resulting in a sharp fall in capacity utilisation of mills. The new policy is expected to enable the industry to improve its capacity utilisation. Of "course, the impact of the new policy is unlikely to be felt during the current season to any significant extent. At best, the output of sugar in 1985-86 may improve marginally as a result of some diversion of cane from the gur and khandsari sectors to sugar mills in view of the better price offered. In that case, the earlier estimate of sugar production of 65 lakh tonnes may go up by about five lakh tonnes to 70 lakh tonnes.
