September 28. 1985 Soft Spots in Balance of Payments THE official balance of payments data for 1982-83 compiled by the Reserve Bank of India and published in the May issue of its Bulletin indicates a turnround in the external payments position of the country after a severe strain experienced in 1981-82. The overall balance of payments deficit contracted from Rs 2,220 crore in 1981-82 to Rs 1,268 crore in 1982-83. The deficit on trade account shrunk to Rs 5,776 crore from Rs 6,120 crore in 1981-82 and Rs 5,967 crore in 1980-81, but was perceptibly higher than the figure of Rs 3,370 crore for 1979-80.
