Soda Ash- A Field Day for Manufacturers
September 7, 1985 of man-made fibres.
Kantikumar Podar has dwelt at consider- able length on the issue of stabilisation of raw material prices which has an important bearing on fortunes of the mill industry. He has suggested the setting up of a broad- based Cotton Board representing all the interests concerned to advise CCI on the role of price stabilisation operations. There is little that the proposed Cotton Board can do unless the gross inadequacies in collecting crop information are overcome. The industry's concern for assured supply of raw material at stable prices is understandable. But what about ensuring supply of cloth at reasonable prices? Industry's past record in this respect is not all that commendable. Gross neglect of modernisation and renovation of plant and machinery and manage ment inadequacies are largely to blame fox the high cost of production and poor quality of fabrics as also for the increasing incidence of sickness in the industry.
