In spite of the unfortunate aspects of later Japanese history, particularly between 1931 and 1945, Japan emerged at the end of the day with its identity intact, its genius fortified, and its culture not at the mercy of foreigners. Japan retained control over its own destiny. It did not allow the West to dictate the in tellectual terms for its modernisation trauma.
