Tonic for the Few, Poison for the Many?
UNTIL not many months ago, the cotton mill industry complained about being "in the grip of a deep crisis" and being "caught between two stools of surging cost escalations and diminishng textile market'' In his annual speech last September the then Chairman of the Indian Cotton Mills' Federation Arvind N Lalbhai had stated that "the immediate future for the majority of the mills seems quite bleak" and that the "outlook for the [cotton] season 1984-83 appears to be even more grim". The leading spokesmen of of the industry must be feeling greatly embarrassed by the profound change in the textile scene.
