UNITED KINGDOM Immigration Controls and Racism Michael Jacobs LAST month's judgment by the European Court of Human Rights that Britain's immigration rules are unlawful because they discriminate against women comes at a time when the Conservative government's immigration and race policies in general are under increasing attack. A recent report by the (government-financed) Commission for Racial Equality declared that the immigration rules were "racist in operation"; while the disclosure that queues of applicants to enter Britain in the Indian sub-continent were being maintained deliberately to control the numbers of Black immigrants has led to legal action being initiated against the government by the National Council for Civil Liberties.
