Maharashtra-Crumbs for the Opposition
Crumbs for the Opposition THE Congress(I) victory in 43 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats from Maharashtra has gone beyond the expectations of the Congress(I) Chief Minister himself. Prior to the poll Vasantdada Patil had stated that his party would win 40 seats. Presumably he did not expect his party to win five of the six seats in Bombay, as it did. The city had returned an equal number of opposition candidates in the 1980 poll, to be termed then as a 'Janata Island', defying the all- India current.
