THE chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), Rashmikant Durlabji, has described 1983-84 as "another record-shattering year" for the gem and jewellery export trade. Leaving the Rs 1,195 crore target set for the year well behind, exports reached an all-time high of Rs 1,324 crore, representing a massive 28.8 per cent increase over the previous year's record figure of Rs 1,029 crore. Diamonds accounted for nearly 90 per cent of the total exports.
