Wages of Casual and Attached Labour in Agriculture

 sumption of coir and coir products continues to grow at a very slow pace, inadequate to compensate for the decline in the overseas intake. The industry has been suggesting mechanisation to overcome the present problems. This suggestion has been renewed recently by K Sugunendran, chairman of the Indian Coir Association. He has suggested a two-pronged strategy consisting of a phased programme of mechanisation and simultaneous reduction of the present work force of 4.5 lakh people by 50 per cent. According to him, of the present value of coir output of Rs 90 crore the wage bill accounts for Rs 60 crore. This amount distributed among the existing work force gives a per capita annual wage of a mere Rs 1,333. By halving the work force, it is claimed, workers would not only get higher rarnin-gs Inn. also steady employment for 280 days in a year.
