demands of the agitating fanners related precisely to the interests of this section of the peasantry. Under the agreement arrived at on March 18, the farmers' demand for withdrawal of the increase in power tariffs is to be referred to an expert committee, while other demands such as that to be allowed to use motors installed for tubewells for other farm work as well without extra charge, etc, have been conceded. It has been estimated that the concessions relating to power supply will cost the government Rs 20 crore annually. The government evidently felt that this was a small price to pay for the chance to make inroads into the Akali Dal's hold over the prosperous segment of the Sikh peasantry.
