LABOUR-Public Sector Employees Struggle Called Off

February 5, 1983 LABOUR Public Sector Employees' Struggle Called Off (By a Special Correspondent) THE confrontation that was building up in the public sector over the Government's wage policy has, as expected, been de-fused. The first step in this direction was taken when the major opposition trade union centres grouped together in the National Campaign Committee (NCC), changed their earlier decision of an indefinite coalmine strike and instead called a 72-hour strike (January 17 to 19). The second step was taken during that successful strike when the proposed one-day all- India public sector strike due for January 28 was called off. That the NCC was quite eager to call off the whole struggle, which was gaining considerable momentum around the country, becomes obvious from the NCC's communique which makes it clear that it was the NCC that made the proposal to appoint a committee to look into the DA question and that it was on the Finance Ministers' acceptance of this proposal that the strike had been called off.
