Tyre Industry-Competition with Concessions

Japan's Entry AFTER having acquired for itself a sizable share of the market of" Western Europe and the US, Japan's automobile industry is set on a course to dominate production of passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and two-wheelers in India. Following the highly-publicised collaboration between State-owned Maruti Udyog and Japan's Suzuki Motor Company, signed last year, another Japanese automobile manufacture, Isuzu Motor Company, has now made its bow on the Indian automobile scene, Isuzu has signed an agreement with Birla's Hindustan Motors for the manufacture of 'modern, fuel saving' passenger curs, 'Hindustan Motors' collaboration agreement with the Japanese manufacturer revises its earlier plans to team up with Britain's Vauxhal Company. The change seemingly stems from Hindustan Motors' keenness to produce a passenger car to compete with Maru- ti's Suzuki which is expected to be put on the market early next year. Under the agreement with the Japanese manufacturer, which is yet to be formally approved by the Government of India, Hindustan Motors will get from Isuzu the technical know-how for domestic manufacture of not only the Japanese engine but also the complete power train
