A Mountain in Decay (By a Special Correspondent) THE town of Pithoragarh In the Ku- maun hills, just a few miles west of Nepal and on the old trade route to Tibet, was the venue of an unusual get-together of scholars and activists, Ostensibly called to launch & new Hindi annual named Pahar (Mountain) on October 19, the meeting provided an opportunity for people from different parts of Uttarakhand (as Kumaun and Garhwal are collectively known) to discuss, and observe at first hand, the continuing degradation of this mountainous region, whose crucial ecological (as distinct from strategic) importance has only recently been fully realised.
