Growing in a Growth Industry Hansavivek HINDUSTAN MOTORS has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Isuzu Motors of Japan for manufacture of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions and axles in India. These engines are highly fuel-efficient with very low maintenance cost and compare with the best in the international market. This will enable the company to upgrade the technology of its passenger cars. The company had entered into an agreement with Vauxhall Motors for manufacture of 'heavier commercial vehicles based on existing Vauxhall technology and relevant plant facilities available with the company. But a thorough study of the product range of other manufacturers has shown that Isuzu Motors hag the latest in product design and technology, making them most suitable for Indian conditions in terms of cost and requirements. The company has submitted both proposals to Central government for approval. Moreover, anticipating a substantial gap between demand and pro duction capacity of commercial vehicles at end of Seventh Plan and in order to achieve economic level of production, company has approached government for expansion of its production capacity of commercial vehicles from 15,000 to 90,000 units per annum. Construction work for the project of manufacturing diesel engines, power shift transmissions and torque converters at Hosur, in Tamil Nadu, has started. These products are expected to be introduced sometime during 1984. With their introduction, the company will be achieving a greater degree of self- sufficiency by offering advanced technology to consumers of earth moving product'.
