Considering the rapidly rising demand for housing in our bigger cities and the exponential increase in the costs of such housing, it is hardly surprising that there has virtually been a run on the HDFC for housing finance. In 1982-83, the fifth year of the Corporation's operation, total loan approvals were Rs 73 crore, a rise of as much as 65 per cent over the previous year's level of Rs 44 crore. Loan disbursals similarly rose by over 60 per cent, to Rs 48 crore from Rs 30 crore. In terms of the number of housing units for which loans were approved, the increase was somewhat smaller though still very impressive
