Annual Ritual

One does not have to be a supporter of the Soviet Union or of the East European governments to endorse the accusation of strong ideological bias on the part of the Nobel peace committee. This is not an award for the working class movement across all national boundaries but for a specifically Polish movement whose principal merit, in the committee's eyes, lies not so much in its advocacy of the greatest possible extension of workers' rights but in its explicit challenge to the regime in Poland.
