What is worse, doubts have been expressed about the earnestness of the Sri Lanka government's efforts to contain the violence, especially in the initial stages, Even those who are inclined to be charitable to the Jayewardenc government acknowledge that for a while it virtually lost control over its own police and army which carried out punitive pogroms against the Tamils.
