AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH- Decline of Agro-Economic Research Centres

AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH Decline of Agro-Economic Research Centres (By a Special Correspondent) THE central government has recently set up a six-member committee to review the status, working and future of 11 Agro-Economic Research Centres (AERCs) functioning in different parts of the country through the financial support from the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES) of the Agriculture Ministry. This is the third review of AElRCs since 1970, if the re-review of a few centres in 1974 is also considered. Since previous reviews helped little, the proposed fresh review has not inspired much hope among those concerned with AERCs. The task of the new review panel will be more meaningful if effort is devoted to understanding the real problems of AERCs instead of merely compiling formal documents supplied by the DES and the various AERCs and drawing conclusions from them. A bit of history could help to bring out the issues.
