January 1-8, 1983 SRI LANKA Seeking Sanction for Dictatorship The Referendum in Sri Lanka Wiswa Warnapala THE Presidential election of October 1982, which gave President J R Jaya- wardene a fresh mandate, has now created a new political situation in the country, and an attempt is being made to utilise the device of the referendum to extend the life of the present Parliament. This move has stirred all those people who value freedom and democracy and is being opposed by the totality of the Opposition in the country, including those vociferous forces associated with the Tamil minority in the North.
