With Wealth from Salt Hansavivek TATA CHEMICALS, in a determined drive to maximise production of soda ash, to restore national self-sufficiency, achieved a 22,3 per cent increase in production from July I, 1981, to mid- February 1982 over the corresponding period last year. But its drive was frustrated for want of timely and effective curb by government of the unconscionable 'dumping' of soda ash in the country at prices entirely unrelated to international prices or the true costs of production. Burdened with large unsold stocks of soda ash stacked in the open and endangered by the monsoon rains, the company had to drastically cut back production from February 16.
