January 1-8, 1983 exports or engineering goods during the first half of 1982-83 (April to September) aggregated Rs 445 crore, against Rs 390 crore in the same period last year. While in itself this is not a poor rate of growth, it is certainly not in keeping with ambitious target-setting dime for the industry's exports. Exports may pick up in the second half of the year in keeping with the past pattern, but it is now almost certain that they will nevertheless fall short of the target of Rs 1,400 crore for 1982-83 by a wide margin.
