LEBANON- Israel Planning for a Takeover

THE last twelve months have witnessed a severe escalation of Israeli aggression against Lebanon, In spring last year, there were exchanges between the Israeli-backed Phalange and the Lebanese and Palestinian left forces lasting for several weeks and culminating in Western hysteria aver the so-called Syrian 'siege' of the town of Zahle and the 'missile crisis', in the midst of a tense summer. The massive bombing by Israel of civilian areas of Lebanon, particularly those of Beirut, followed in mid-July when over 300 people were killed and several hundred injured. The last quarter of the year saw a spate of car bombs, strategically placed in densely populated areas of the main cities, where again hundreds of civilians were killed and maimed. In these twelve months alone over two thousand people are estimated to have been killed and hundreds injured in various parts of Lebanon.
