The Tamasha in Delhi

ONE has, I suppose, to be involved in the political tamasha in Delhi to be able to appreciate it. The players have one striking -quality in common: they are empty headed, but with built-in antennas which tell them exactly what kind of drooling subservience their leader expects of them. As we gaze upon the bizarre scene, we are astonished by our general incapacity to influence it. The passing of Sheikh Abdullah is a reminder of what leadership was once upon a time.
