At the end of 1981, there were officially 222 effective joint venture proposals' Of these, 125 were in operation, while the remaining 97 were in various stages of implementation. Of the total proposals, as many as 90, constituting over 40 per cent, are in south-east Asian countries. Africa has 42 such units, or over 18 per cent of the total proposals. While in south Asian countries five projects are in operation and 22 are being implemented, in west Asia 16 are in operation and 10 are under implementation. The remaining 37 projects (18 under operation and 19 being implemented) are scattered over Europe, America and Australia. Among the projects already in operation, the majority are light engineering, followed by textiles. Others are in chemi- cals, pharmaceuticals, paper, trading and marketing, restaurants, etc.
