account, while correctly emphasising that the communists subordinated the cause of women's liberation to that of reinovalof class-oppression, might lead us to neglect the fact that it was the communists who first made the specific question of women's liberation part of their overall political agenda. It is necessary to make it clear that this stand, however tenuous its realisation may have been, is what enabled the communists in the 1940s to build up, in an unprecedented manner, a mass organisation of women in states where they were strung.
