January 2-9, 1082 The manufacture of basic pesticides started in India in 1952. In order to sustain the development of this industry, production of pesticidal chemicals has been included in Annexure-I to the licensing policy of the government. Consequently this industry has been open to large houses and foreign minority companies as well. Indeed, multinational companies have come to occupy a major share in the production of technical grade pesticides in India. At present, there are 23 units manufacturing the technical grade materal, and about 90 per cent of technical grade production is by multinationals. Pesticides formulations an made by 50 units in the medium-scale sector. There are also 350 units in the small-scale sector, mostly undertaking manufacture of conventional formulations, such as dust powders, wettable powders, and to a limited extent emulsifiable concentrates.
