1981-82 was to be just covered by imports, Viewed against this background, the government is justified in suspending further imports. But the question is whether it is advisable to stick to such a delicate demand-supply balance in view of the already high market price and the rising trend of production in the tyre industry. A hand- to-mouth situation always encourages hoarding. There are reports that the sizeable profits realised from the high market prices of the recent past are being utilised to finance hoarding of rubber by some of the large plantation and traders.
